Unhappy Slowwww access to server by client. DNS?

Hi -

I'm running SuSE 8.2 on server, Win ME on client. When I access a directory from the server, it can take ages to display the contents....the more files, the more time it takes to display.

Once the files are displayed, it takes no time to move between client and server (for example, I can pull an MP3 from the server to the client in no time flat, but it takes for ever to display the directory with all of the MP3s listed).

I'm running Samba, with a basic smb.conf file. I know nothing. Is it problem where the computers have trouble finding each other over the network, so every item that is sent takes awhile to reach its destination?

I don't know where to start to set this up.

Any help/directions on getting started?

Thanks for any and all help.

Are you running a firewall on the windows box?
Are you running a wireless network?
Does this only happen when you first connect to the share and authenticate?

Hope this questions help. Helps me think to run down the possibilities

i'm running a netgear wgr614 wireless router, which i think uses a SIP firewall. the server responds slowly everytime i access a drive, and gets proportionally worse with the number of files in a directory. so if i refresh it takes just as long. for a directory with mp3's this is a huge wait, but once they're listed, if i click on one it is fed over the network with no problems at all.

i don't know if the linux box has its own firewall. seems like i read that it is running one as default?, but i could be off my rocker.

also, i use WEP encryption between laptop and router, but i had the same slow access when not using encryption.
