Question Network client not receiving address of DNS server

Hello,

I have 2 pc's on my home network connected via a Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Router. My server is running Mandrake 10.1 and my workstation is a dual boot XP/Mandrake 10.1. The Linksys Router is also my DHCP server.

I recently configured Bind verison 8.x on the server in order to get familiar with it. I assigned a static ip to the server and added the Bind server ip address into the DNS server table of the Linksys router so that it would be advertised to the workstation with the DHCP broadcast. Here's the deal:

In Linux ( on the workstation) the ip address of my Bind server is not shown under Mandrakelinux Control Center --> Network and Internet --> Manage Connections. Only the 2 DNS servers of my ISP show up and, obviously, I cannot ping the server by name. In XP, however, the ip address of my BIND server is present and I can ping the server by name.

How can I get Linux on the dual boot machine to recognize the BIND server ip? Again, DHCP is enabled on the Linux dual-boot machine.

Thanks.

Allen

Since you are using DHCP - it is the job of dhcp server (i.e linksys) to use the name server defined.
It may be that it is showing the IP but not actually using it. It is fetching that value from /etc/resolv.conf. have you ever specified a DNS server there and used static IP for your workstation?
