Slow internet after nongracefull disconect

I'm using wvdial to connect to the internet with a 56K modem and it works fine.

When pressing Ctrl-C wvdial prints "attempting to disconnect gracefully". If it has enough time to do so, everything is fine, but if wvdial is killed or the xterm closed, the next time I connect to the internet it is awfully slow. If I reboot it is working fine again.

Is it possible to avoid a reboot after a nongraceful disconnect?
