Slackware 15 dnsmasq - internet hanging on the client machines

Hi everyone,

Just for the explanation, 3 years (actually it seems more than 3 yrs ago I had started to play around with DHCP/DNS server as "dnsmasq", so I was asking here for help and managed to solve everything:
https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...er-4175622520/

So, about over 3 years my server with Slackware 14.2 x86 is working flawlessly as a DHCP/DNS server with dnsmasq. And now, I can say that I`m pretty experienced with dnsmasq and my server setup with more than 4 network cards with the static addresses and name customization etc.

The problem comes after I decided to upgrade to Slackware 15 64-bit, as completely setup the new OS on the same hardware. It`s a Supermicro server completely compatible with Slackware.
I remember once I have tried this setup with Slackware 14.2 x64 and had the same issue, but then I have reinstalled to x86 and it was working, so I didn`t care. But now I want to have the newest version and seems to me strange to have the same issue again. I have to move on with the new version, maybe I should try Slackware 15 x86, if exists.. Is that a possible solution..? I don`t think so, I think everything should work on 64-bit, as on 32-bit, at least for it`s purpose.

The issue is, after setup of Slackware 15 64-bit 5.15.19 and nearly the same dnsmasq configuration as on the 14.2, it serves as expected (Windows and Linux machines), but I noticed a huge lag on the internet. This is not an ISP issue, the internet is working fine on the machines directly attached to the router. There are a lot of "Request time out" on the clients while pinging.

I have done the upgrades:
- Kernel from 5.15.19 to 5.15.34
- dnsmasq upgrade to the newest
- NetworkManager upgrade to the newest
- everything else to the newest

It`s the same, the issue persists before and after the upgrade.

I don`t know where to suspect, because 2 days has passed, I have tried a multiple options, adjusting the dnsmasq, and at the end it`s always the same.

As before, I`m using ip_forward and parprouted to have all the interfaces to see each other:
https://docs.slackware.com/howtos:ne...bridge_routing

I know this is a bit old, but it installs and working it`s job, so I don`t see the issue here.
/etc/resolv.conf is configured fine, I have tried also with 8.8.8.8 with no change.

As I mentioned before, the clients are accepting the parameters from dnsmasq just fine, but the internet has many pauses, stalls, pinging is not working as expected, and on the server itself is working fine. I`m using UFW as a firewall, but there is no change with disabled firewall, multiple restarts of services and reboots.
It is facing timeouts and the surfing is a pain.

On the Linux client side, the ping is also showing multiple timeouts and the download is not working fine. Here I haven`t tried to surf, since there is no GUI .

Edit: Today when I come back home from my work, I will take the second disk and install the 32-bit version of Slackware 15, I can see it exists (I didn`t know) and I will setup & test how it works, and then I will update here if the issue persists also in 32-bit version, and if this is not the case, then it`s a good alternative, if this makes the job done. The other distro is not an option . The downgrade to 14.2 again would be the most unwanted solution...

Thanks in advance.

Here`s the update so far:

- Installation of Slackware 15 32-bit - failed . It seems this version is not compatible with my Supermicro board, it doesn`t even boot properly... But there wasn`t problems with the 64-bit version, that`s odd. The 64-bit version is still alive on the other OS disk I have put aside while testing & avoiding to try it again.

- Since the mentioned version doesn`t work properly, as mentioned in the post #1, the internet on the clients does not seem to work properly, I was out of options, so I have installed Slackware 14.2 32-bit and fully updated the Kernel & packages. I have configured everything & dnsmasq. Everything immediately started to work perfectly.

This is the very first time I`m having the compatibility issues with Slackware so far with the Supermicro board, which is pretty simple, but on the other side about 8 years old, and I even tried 32-bit, which should be more compatible than 64-bit.

If anyone else had similar issue, and was able to fix it, it would be nice to try, but so far I`m affraid I`m facing the hardware issue, with the obvious reasons.

I wish if someone could explain how this is possible, if 14.2 32-bit works perfectly, but on the same hardware version 15 (both 32-bit and 64-bit) is not...?

Does your Supermicro board support 64-bits?

hmm, I`m not 100% sure, that was the main reason for this post, in the meanwhile I have realized that might be some incompatibility with the Slackware 15 64-bit (and also 32-bit) and my board. The reason for that doubt is because the 14.2 32-bit version if working perfectly, just perfectly. I don`t know about 64-bit 14.2 version, or -current, but maybe I could test -current, but I think it would be pointless, and anyway I try to avoid -current, since this is important and I would like to keep it stable, and not testing environent. I will update further.

For now with 14.2 fully updated Slackware, this system is a rock-stable. Too bad that 15 can`t work on my board, but it would make sense for some hardware refreshment in my case. Btw, my board is C2SEA s775, I know it`s a bit older, but it is a really good board.

The CPU support 64bits.
It might be easy to try another distribution.
I read your first post. Based on that post, it look like that network configuration of Slackware 14 did not work on Slackware 15.
