Simply COnnecting to the internet!

I was all excited to fianlly get around to installing Linux on one my my hard drives. Installation of Mandrake 10 was a breeze, however now that I am into the gui, NO IDEA how to set it up to connect to the net. I am on ADSL behind a router. I am on the machine right now so it is connected and everything. can anyone tell me where to start?

*My ethernet card is onboard if that changes anything.

i think that should work out of the box
anyway, try "dhcpcd" as root
if still no internet, post the results from "lsmod" and tell us details about your network card or post "lspci"

Try using the internet connection wizard in the Mandrake Control Center. Select lan connection, DHCP and use the router IP address as the gateway.

Of course assuming that MDK recognized and configured the network adapter.

Good news and bad news ... It Looks promicing however when I click the LAN option, it tells me It does not reccognise the ethernet card and "which driver should I try" and it gives me a list. I do however have a disk with the linux driver on it for my ethernet card, all i need to know is where is there the option to select a driver from a disk. In windows there's that "have disk" button, is there soemthing simaler in linux?

alright, so i have been working on this problem for the last couple days. i just installed mandrake 10 64 bit edition and had no ethernet and crappy onboard sound (i cant wait to try to install my graphics card.....).

the problem is with the nforce 3 driver, which does not come with mandrake, nor would it do any good if it did. the driver in question can be downloaded at this address:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_n...amd64_1.0-0292

warning though, do so will only give you endless headaches lol. from my research on this problem it seems there is a conflict with the kernel version packaged with mandrake 10 and the driver.

on first try to install you will get to 11% and then be told that it was not installed. upon reading the log file you will be tempted to follow the instructions it gives you (which is to "make mrproper" the kernel source).

feel free to do this:
browse to /usr/src/linux
open a terminal from the tools menu (or just launch from wherever and cd /usr/src/linux)
su
make mrproper

no errors will occur. but the driver will be no more happy. this time it complains that the kernel source is the wrong version, or some nonsense (note that running make afterwards will give you the original error message again).

anywho, if anyone knows how to fix this problem, or if the thread starter finds a solution i would be very happy to hear it.

Hey thank you for the help everyone, I have to admit linux is harder than I thought :S but I'll keep plugging away, I might switch distros though. Thanks again

i tried updating the kernel source through the mandrake rpm update tool, and then i ran a make config, and then a make. i'm not sure if this was the proper thing to do (i am but a linux newbie myself) but it was to no avail. now the installer stops at 15% instead of 11 and the error log tells me to do a make config and to enable module loading:

The present kernel configuration has modules disabled.
Type 'make config' and enable loadable module support.
Then build a kernel with module support enabled.

make[3]: *** [modules] Error 1
make[2]: *** [modules] Error 2
-> Error.
ERROR: The NVIDIA kernel module was not created.

which is i think what i did. but maybe i did it wrong. can anyone give me some insight into this? the kernel update i downloaded was 2.6.3-19mdk, while the original was 2.6.3-9mdk

also, would it be too much of a hastle to upgrade to the latest kernel version available? or is that going to screw up a lot of other things on mandrake? someone said that upgrading the kernel in a release such as mandrake will create a lot of problems with other things needing to be updated too.
