Hello all....I'm new to Linux and SUSE. Typically, I'm more of a OS/400 and Windows guy. I loaded SUSE 9.3 on my old XP box, wiped everything clean and am trying to configure Samba to share my resources with the Windows machine.

I can't get localhost:901 to appear.

I got my "Netwokr Neighborhood" to show my Linux server...but no resources will share. I get a permissions error...that I don't have access to the resource.

For a while, I was able to drill into the server and see the folders: my profile, users, and the hard drive shares. But I've never been able to get access to the resources because of something permissions related.

I also thought that I needed to give my Windows user superuser authority...but couldn't figure out how to upgrade my status in S9.3. Please help.

port 901 is swat i think... you'd need to install that first and start it as a service (yuck.. don't if you can avoid it)

edit /etc/samba/smb.conf to go over configuring it properly. you'll benefit from checking the samba howto at tldp.org

Just something to try. I had similar problems and got my windows machine to see and work with my linux box by doing all the samba config (which I am assuming you have finished) AND I had to right-click on folders to be shared (using Konqueror) and completing the sharing dialog on the pop-up menu.

It was amazing after so much fiddling with networkconfig using yast this fixed all.

you don't need samba.conf if you want to use linux box as one of the machines on the net ..

you need it if you are going to export folders/printers etc. like from a windows machine.
generally you can use just setup samba and then from linux mount windows fs(fat32 only on most distro's)

how is it nutsobilly? is it solved or not yet?
