Sharing a broadband connection via a modem?


I do a little bit of troubleshooting for windows folks that I know, and its often useful to to put their boxes on the internet do download patches and take advantage of free online virus scanning.

Now that I have ADSL I cannot use my old dialup connection to do this.

I have found this circuit and a few others which work on the same principle to allow two computers to be connected via their modems. It doesn't provide a dialtone, but that can be bypassed by telling to modem not to wait for a dialtone.

Now I need to know if I can have the computer I'm working on connect to the internet by dialing into my current box. This shouldn't be impossible, as it's pretty much what a dialup ISP does anyway.

It is possible, but it's not popular, because it's not the best way to share the connection. 2 NICs + cable makes it faster. Do you really need to use modems?

I'm wanting to test the modems as well, and I don't know of any freenets/BBSs in my area.

There's also the sense of accomplishment in doing something different.

I've never tried this, but I guess you can do this by configuring one machine as dial-up server (if you don't know how to do this, I can write more) and the other one as clinet. It should work without any other tricks.

If you know of a good HOWTO on creating a dialup server, please do post it. If not, could you please post more on that effect. I'd appreciate it.

Thanks for the ideas, you've provided me with some good search terms for googling.

This page from Red Hat seems to have some useful documentation.

I haven't had much progress yet, due to lack of time.

Any other intresting documentation you can provide would be helpful
