Sharing a broadband connection via a modem?
 

I do a little bit of troubleshooting for windows folks that I know, and its often useful to to put their boxes on the internet do download patches and take advantage of free online virus scanning.

Now that I have ADSL I cannot use my old dialup connection to do this.

I have found this circuit and a few others which work on the same principle to allow two computers to be connected via their modems. It doesn't provide a dialtone, but that can be bypassed by telling to modem not to wait for a dialtone.

Now I need to know if I can have the computer I'm working on connect to the internet by dialing into my current box. This shouldn't be impossible, as it's pretty much what a dialup ISP does anyway.

It is possible, but it's not popular, because it's not the best way to share the connection. 2 NICs + cable makes it faster. Do you really need to use modems?

I'm wanting to test the modems as well, and I don't know of any freenets/BBSs in my area.

There's also the sense of accomplishment in doing something different.

I've never tried this, but I guess you can do this by configuring one machine as dial-up server (if you don't know how to do this, I can write more) and the other one as clinet. It should work without any other tricks.
