Samba/RedHat help please

Hello,

fairly new to linux itself, we are trying to install a newer version of Samba (2.2.12) the version before hand was 2.0.7, we downloaded the new version from samba.org and went from there.

we followed instructions of ./configure - make - make install.

then checked the version running and it was still 2.0.7 so we uninstalled that version and installed the newer version again, but still nothing, we are installing from Source and its just not happening. this is quite urgent so any help that anyone can give will be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance for anything

James

Do you know how version 2.0.7 was installed? Was it installed as a Red Hat rpm package or was it installed from source code?

thanks for the quick reply. we are quite sure that it was the RPM when RH7.1 was installed, but we only have the source, can anyone point us the way of an RPM for Samba 2.2.12 and give any guidance.

is there a RPM for this or do we need a newer version of RH before Samba will work?

Is there a reason why you are sticking with Samba 2.2 instead of Samba 3? There are rpm's for Samba 3 on Samba.org's site. They are listed for RH 9 but they may work for older versions of RH as well.

The problem you are probably having there is that if you didn't uninstall the old version of Samba, the script that starts the samba services under /etc/rc.d (not sure of the exact directory but I don't have a Linux machine here to look at) is starting the dameons in /usr/bin or /usr/sbin. If you install by compiling from source code, the new dameons are probably located under /usr/local/samba or something similar to that. If you can determine the location of smbd and nmbd for the new version, you should be able to modify the initialization script under /etc/rc.d so it starts the proper dameons and make it work.

I think you would be better off removing the old version completely from your system. I think you'll continue to have problems if you don't.
Red Hat usually installed Samba in more than one rpm package. If you look at the man page for rpm, you should be able to figure out how to do a query with the rpm command to find all the samba rpm packages and remove them. If you don't mind moving Samba 3, get the rpm package for the latest version from Samba.org and install it.
