Samba Permissions Questions

Hi There,

I am wanting to write a file over a samba share so that once the file is written, it becomes non-editable as soon as the file is uploaded.

Will write access on the samba share with a mask setting that will not allow write do the trick?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Jonny

Here are a couple of suggestions for you to play about with:

I'm not sure that there is an option within SAMBA to do what you want, but you may get close if you look at the man page for smb.conf and search for 'map read only'.

If your file system on the Linux server is ext2 or ext3, you could make the file immutable (cannot be edited, deleted or have hard links set to it).

You set this flag with the command chattr and view the results with the command lsattr.

You may be able to set the attribute at the directory level and make it recursive (chattr -DiR dirname or something like that. I can't check it out as I don't have user extended attributes enabled on my partitions. This can be set in /etc/fstab if you are in the same boat) I don't know if the -D attribute will apply to files created in the directory in the future - you'll have to create a test directory and play about!
