what u need is 2 NIC`s in your win xp box in order for u to connect to ur linux box. If u check out the ICS help file in win xp it will tell u this. Once u have popped in another card u will connect no probs.

I don't need two NICs. I have a USB internet connection, and two NICs being bridged would do nothing for me except having another NIC sitting there doing nothing.

..huh?

Why would I need two NICs? I have one onboard, and it goes to the switch. I have a USB connections that does all the actual internet.

What would two NICs do for me?

also, if it is necessary, why can I bring another xp machine over here and use the network on it perfectly fine?

I'm lost on why I would need two.

EDIT.
Quote:
The ICS host computer typically uses an Ethernet network adapter if you are using an external DSL or cable modem, so a second network adapter is required. If you have an internal modem, you only need one network adapter.
Taken from the ICS help files.

I have a modem that connects through USB, what that says is you need two NICs if one is being used by a router for the actual internet.
That isn't my case.

Ever thought about doing this?
I have a different router than that one. I don't know if it would work the same or not, one is for rx and the other is for tx.. it's a DW4000.

Man, I've been googling all over the place trying to find a bit more on this crap. I really don't understand as to why you're not getting online. I don't think its an ICS issue any more. I think its something small and simple about your connection between the computers. I have a small hard drive that was laying about, so I just installed Slack 9.1 on it. I am typing with it now (but that crappy no-type-in-form-boxes shit happens with Moz1.4, so I got Opera 7.5 to surf with). All I keep finding is your posts on this site or linuxforums or broadbandreports. You'd think you were the first to come across this. Its downright strange.

I did find that there was a reference to a linux version of your connection software on sourceforge, but I was too sleepy at that point to follow the link. Man, if you could only get a free upgrade of that modem to the 6000 (without an extended service commitment) They've got you by the curlies. Its not fair. Now, how do we get you connected with both puters.

I was kinda kidding about the modem mod, actually. LOL (but I know you can have success - I'm using a motherboard that I operated on...)

so much has happened, let's start at the beggining again, turn off any firewalls, sounds like the ics is setup properly, so from the slack box, from a terminal as root, run netconfig. set a staic ip, be sure to put in your default gateway, and nameserver to the ip of the windows machine. i gotta believe that it's something small being overlooked. while running netconfig, take nothing for granted, assume every setting is crucial.
good luck.

I have just gone through my linux setup for connection to xp (bearing in mind mine is rh9
in /etc/host.conf i have
order host,bind
multi on

in /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/eth0.route
i have
gateway0=192.168.0.1 (win xp addy)
netmask=255.255.255.0
address0=192.168.0.1(win xp addy)
u could also try seeing if there is anything in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts that may need altering.

If u finally sort that bit out then in
etc/resolv.conf
i have
search
domain www.tiscali.co.uk my isp
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (dns1)
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (dns 2)

Thumbs up

Well, today I went to Wal-Mart and I am now mad at myself.. I had been telling myself it was probably the network card for a while, so I spent an extra $15, and now it works great. I'm going to plug that other card in another machine and see if I can get it fixed, so I can have even another computer online, which would be pretty nice!!

Thanks for all of the help. I learned a LOT from all of this, which is the reason I have it sitting there.. I'm going into computer science in about four months and I've worked on these things for a while, so this has been a good experience.. Now to go learn some good java coding!

Thanks again for all of the help, you guys really pushed me in the right direction, I would have been clueless without all of it!

Yehaw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After 104 posts to this thread alone and to other forums around the net (just gaining your immortal place in Googledom, right?), you have a network that does what its told. You know my first recommendation has always been check the cable......you were there too. Well, you (and me and anyone else who has ever read this thread) did learn quite a bit out of all this. Not everyone would have that pit-bull tenacity like you did. Thanks for not giving up. I've learned a lot out of this too.
