retreve windows computer name


i have at home and at the moment i am using Advanced port scanner to find out who is on at the moment and all that does it pings the computer and shows if their on or not.

I have done this so far just by setting up a loop and running threw all the ips and pinging them.

But one thing i can not do it retreive the computer names do you know any way of doing this using php or any other language.

Just want to have

BOB 192.168.1.1
JIM 192.168.2.1

..... etc

can anyone help me?

The nmblookup utility from the Samba package will resolve NetBIOS computer names.

Samba comes with the "findsmb" script that lists the SMB servers on the subnet. But a much better and faster program is nbtscan which can scan specific or ranges or networks for SMB servers instantly.

Thats cool but how do i get the mac addresses and ips for the other ones who are not using samba?
