Question Why would a windows computer smoke a linux computer for download speed ?

I don't know if this is normal, but I downloaded the same file from the same place, first while booted in Windows, and second (same machine) booted in Linux. First results were that Windows beat Linux by 80-100 mb/s . Now when I first looked at the numbers, I could not believe it. So I tried my test 2 more times with the same conditions. All three tests showed the same results.

Why is this so ? I have not made any intentional settings to restrict bandwidth in Linux.

Is there something to change which will alter this behavior ?

JC

Or possibly a misconfigured set of iptables rules. I had this happen when my firewall was not set up correctly, causing download delays in Linux. Hey I was an Iptables then.

I agree there is probably something wrong with your configuration. I have done just these sorts of tests on several occasions with two different computers and two different distros.

I have consistently found that Linux and Windows 2000 give similar download performance, both about 25% faster than Windows 98.
