problem with dns

i installed a dns server in one of my systems. i have a domain called server.example.com . if i dig that domain in the server it is producing results.

on the other system connected to this system . i put the right entries in the resolv.conf file , viz.,

nameserver server.example.com
search 192.168.1.2
when i dig for the domain on the other system the following error is being shown :
dig:could'nt find server 'server.example.com':temporary failure in name resolution .

please help me sove the problem. please also tell me how to attach hostnames to all systems in the network at the command prompt , like
[root@server~]#
[root@station~]#
when i configured dns on my system with domain server.example.com [root@localhost`] automatically changed to [root@server~] , tell me how to do this to other systems in the LAN without configuring dns on all of them.

all other services like ssh , ftp , nfs are working perfectly well on the lan.

you can't use a hostname for a nameserver entry in /etc/resolv.conf... how you you expect it to find the IP for that server? well you could have an /etc/hosts entry but that's just daft. use the ip address, not the hostname and then it will be able to reach it.
