permissions - connecting to Windows server

I'm new. I'm having a problem with permissions while using a Windows server. I have full rwx/777 access as root, but no matter what I try, I can only achieve r-x permission as a regular user. Here's what I get:

# chmod 777 /mnt/mediaserver
chmod: changing permissions of `/mnt/mediaserver' (requested: 0777, actual: 0755): Operation not permitted

Any thoughts ?

If connecting to a Windoze machine using Samba then you set the permissions on the windows machine. Unix permissions and Windows permissions don't work the same, and samba knows enough to interpret Windows permissions into something that Unix can work with, but you can't always chmod stuff stored on a Windows box.

Okay, now I've got all my Windows permissions wide open - and all along I've been able to rwx to/from the server with both Mac & Windows, I just can't do it from Linux. I still get the same:

chmod: changing permissions of `/mnt/mediaserver/Randy Edelman/Last of the Mohicans/Pieces of a Story.mp3' (requested: 0777, actual: 0755): Operation not permitted

I should point out that I can rwx to the server as root, just not as a user. On windows, I've temporarily set my my permissions so that everyone can do everything...so I don't understand why root would be able to write but a user can't.

You have probably only mounted it with those permissions try setting a umask value to let you write to the mount.
