Painfully slow network

Hi all,

I have a network set up with NFS/NIS sharing files out top several Linux clients. The server has an Intel Pro100 NIC and the client has a 3com 3c590.

The network connection between the two runs at around 190kb/s.

First I suspected the network cards and used modules.conf to force both to full duplex 100Mb/s (which my 100 Mb/s switch claims to support). This didn't change things so I used hdparm to check the drive speeds. After tweaking the drives settings I'd quadrupled the thoughput on most drives and changed on from 172kb/s to 24MB/s on one in particular.

I thought I'd found it with the 172kb/s on the server's hdb but after tuning it still transffered across the network at 190kb/s.

Any suggestions? I'm rapidly running out of ideas.

Cheers,

Jools

Do you see any errors in the output of
/sbin/ifconfig -a
Is the switch managable?
If so, see if there are any errors on its interfaces.
