overridden resolv.conf

my resolv.conf being overwritten all the time by other addresses, anyone might have an idea why ? I am using dhcpcd with the -R option but it apparently has no effect

why does it say "generated by dhcpcd for interface eth0" when I told it not to generate ?

how can I know in general what is writing to what file ?

Any other dhcpcd sessions running? Depending on your distro, it may start one when it starts networking services.

I am sure the right thing to do is to figure out why the file is being changed and how.

Maybe its dhcpcd or pump or some pppoe thing.

But something you can do is make the file immutable, so it can't be changed. Look at chattr(1). Just don't forget what you did!!

You'll have to search through your distro's network setup scripts to see where dhcpcd/udhcpc/dhclient/pump/whatever is invoked and how to prevent overwriting resolv.conf.

You can also check if the dhcp client being used has a global config file which can be set to leave resolv.conf alone (but that is no guarantee since config file options are overridden by command line options).
