DNS Hosts.conf or resolv.conf problem

Greetings,

Here is my situation. it sounds so simple but its causing some serious grief.

I need to know the difference between host (computer name) and hosts (lookup table that resolves )computer names.

Im getting confused which changes what. here is my story. im using SuSE 10 defaults. Right now im using DHCP as my address because for some reason when i put in a static ip (i obviously must have chnaged something eles) i wasnt able to get any of my Vitual hosts to work.
Every site i went to asked my to download a file.

These are some of the errors i got. I cant remember where i found these errors. Sorry :<

Could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName.

The second piece to this puzzel is in sendmail. From pine on my linux box i can send an email to one of my accounts (local) and successfully pop into from my workstation and get it. When i try and use pine from the server for an exernal adderss i get the following

----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
<joe@>
(reason: 517-Domain does not exist: linux.site.)

----- Transcript of session follows -----
... while talking to compusmart.ab.ca.interbaun.mail1.psmtp.com.:
>>> RCPT To:<joe@compusmart.ab.ca>
<<< 517-Domain does not exist: linux.site.

using webmin (sorry newbie) my hostaddress are as follows

IP Address Hostnames
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.2 linux.site , linux

Thoughts...help...SOS
