i'm trying to ssh to a remote host using dns name instead of ip address - i don't know what the ip address is but i do have the dns name - i ssh all the time successfully using username@ip address - does this mean ssh is set up to only connect by ip address and there's nothing i can do about it or is there some way to configure ssh to enable using the dns name?
And are you able to ping to other servers in your network, that is by using their hostname? It looks to me that the server you are trying to connect to is not being resolved correctly. Do you have another workstation or server from where you can try to ping in order to find the IP address of that particular server?
i cannot ping other servers on the network either but i can ping other servers if i ping using the ip address - for example i try to ping srvlinux on our network: $ ping 17.36.24.36 i get a 17.36.24.36 is alive reply but $ ping srvlinux.domain i get unknown host
Ok, this look like you just need to get your DNS server set in order to query by hostname. Do you know what the IP address of the DNS server in your network is? And what distro are you using?
