no ping from linux to win

Hello

I have a small network with some linux and win machines.
Addressing is done by DHCP from a router connected to an internet network.
From win I can access all systems by name.
From Linux I can't ping any win system by name. I can ping them by address ( if I got to the router and get the address there)

If I start (gnome) Netwerkservers (Ubuntu 6.06) I see all Win machines BY NAME and can access them without any trouble.

If I use tsclient or ssh I can only connect by number not by name.
This is also true for the Linux server (but since this server has a semi fixed address I put the address in hosts and that works). I can't however do this for addresses given by DHCP because they can be different next time.

It looks like windows can combine names and addresses and Linux cannot.
On the system i have 4 win boxes , 1 box with suse 9.2 which acts as a fileserver an a local webserver,
2 boxes with ubuntu.

I did already close the firewall on the win machine, but that does not help.

Can anybody give me a solution? Thanks in advance.

If it's a small network what about manually editing the /etc/hosts file and entering each machine hostname and IP address?
That'a what I did on my small virtual network and I can access all my windows and linux virtual machines ^^

I tried that before, but than I get some troubles with the router. Internet doesn't work any more....

There is a seccond problem, 2 machines are portabel and are used elswhere sometimes, where they get there adresses by DHCP, so I have to make 2 configurations and since I am not always there and I don't want to make it to difficult for the users.

Actualy everything is working but it seems that Linux doesn't get the names connected to the addresses. The strange thing is, that Gnome gets them (network).

So I thought it had something to do with the wins server.
