NFS or SMB? What is the best way?

I am a noob to linux and I am having some problems mounting my windows shares... I run RH9, I can download the MS UNIX tools that allow windows to share native NFS with unix/linux. I am just wondering from the pros what is the BEST way to do it? I want the best practice method.

FYI can some one help I keep screwing up my mount

Here is what I type

mount -t smbfs -o username=grady,password=password,workgroup=atv \\black\1976 /mnt/black

My windows box is black and the share is 1976.
I created my mnt/black folder. Says it cant find the mount point?

it depends are you trying to mount local or network shares. For mounting network microsoft shares i would use samba and for network linux shares use nfs.
