newbie network configuration, manually

I have a newbie question: how can i configure the network/internet from command line. I have the network configuring knowledge/experience under window$, but i want to know what are the 4-5 essential commands for configuring/maintaining the network in consloe mode.
Or where are can find some tuts/howtos?

Read the man pages for ifconfig and route. That should cover most of it. Where the configuration files are stored is rather distro-specific -- for Slackware see /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1, /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf, and /etc/rc.d/rc.inet2 -- if you have specific qwuestions read the man pages and post here.
