Networking an iBook and a linux box

Hi. I just got an iBook and I need to transfer some files from my linux desktop (Slackware 10) to the 'book. So I connected them together with a crossed ethernet cable and turned on the ftp service on my iBook. Then I tried to ftp into the ibook from slackware through the ip the mac had assigned itself (192.168.1.5) but I just get the error "Network unreachable". I also get the same error when I try to ping it. I don't know much about networking, am I doing something wrong?

Is either one of them a DHCP server? I don't think it will work if they both assign themselves their own random address. If the linux box isn't already serving DHCP the easiest way to do it is to go into System Preferences on the iBook, then the Sharing panel, then the internet tab and then pick "Share your computer from" (use anything but ethernet) and then below that check the box next to ethernet. Then reconnect them and get Slackware to renew its ip somehow, (I'm somewhat new to linux too, so I would just restart, but there is probably an easier way.)

Once that is done check the ip on Slackware, which should be something like 192.168.1.2, or something along those lines, and connect to that same thing, except with .1 at the end.

Hope that helps a bit.
