Network unstable, working better in Windows XP

I have always used Windows, but I switched to Ubuntu lately and I like it. I had tried FC4 before but switched back to Windows. I don't think I'll switch back to Windows now.

I have a network connection which is quite unstable, especially when other people are using it too. It has always been like this, but Windows seemed to be able to handle it. Linux however (both Ubuntu and Fedora) loads pages slower and both amsn and gaim lose connection now and then.

This happens to both my wireless card (don't know the brand) and my ethernet connection going through a Linksys Wireless Ethernet Bridge (WET11).
When I run them both at the same time the connection seems to be somewhat stable, but still not completely.

I have no idea on where to start troubleshooting. This is the only thing ever that worked better in Windows.

(In fact, I also can't click buttons when my mouse is already on them when they become clickable, I first have to move my mouse away from the button.
Also, the gnome-screensaver sometimes took long to stop if a heavy screensaver was running, but that is solved by using xscreensaver instead. But xscreensaver displays strange error messages, altough it works.
Well anyway Linux works better then Windows.)

Not sure if its the same for you but the internet connection here was very unstable, MSN disconnected regularly, pages didnt fully load and online games were impossible to play. I narrowed down the problem to the router playing up. Ive since installed a Ubuntu server to replace the router and the connection is perfect now.

Try and borrow another router and see if your connection is more stable. It seems very much like a hardware fault somewhere along the line as its not working correctly on numerous operating systems and computers.

I'll try that, when I can get another router.
