i'm consistently getting this error every time i want to see other machines on my network.I have tried going through the available solutions on the net but i seem not to be satisfied.I'm new to Linux though. The error is:
Couldn't display "smb:///", because Nautilus cannot contact the SMB master browser.
Check that an SMB server is running in the local network.
thanks

AFAIK... you need to have Samba running on your local network somewhere. You need to make sure it is set up and started on your local machine. I can't say to you that this is trivial, but you should find the smb.conf file (probably /etc/samba/smb.conf) and run through it and at least set the workgroup and then fire it up.
i have configured samba on my machine and it is running ok.my problem is that until yesterday i could see other windows machine from the network servers submenu but as of today i cant access the machines yet i can ping them.how comes there is this whole difference today...and what can i do?
Nautilus doesn't know how to view a log file. Right click, select "open with" and find an application that looks like a simple text viewer/editor. There are usually several to choose from.
