network servers error

i'm consistently getting this error every time i want to see other machines on my network.I have tried going through the available solutions on the net but i seem not to be satisfied.I'm new to Linux though. The error is:

Couldn't display "smb:///", because Nautilus cannot contact the SMB master browser.
Check that an SMB server is running in the local network.
thanks

what *exactly* are you doing when this error happens. What command did you just type?

Nautilus

AFAIK... you need to have Samba running on your local network somewhere. You need to make sure it is set up and started on your local machine. I can't say to you that this is trivial, but you should find the smb.conf file (probably /etc/samba/smb.conf) and run through it and at least set the workgroup and then fire it up.

Of course, Samba needs to be installed.

my smbd.log is giving me this message:
Nautilus has no installed viewer capable of displaying "/var/log/samba/smbd.log".

what does this mean?

Nautilus doesn't know how to view a log file. Right click, select "open with" and find an application that looks like a simple text viewer/editor. There are usually several to choose from.

because...

its not the right log file? Did you compile your own samba or anything like that?

smbd is not running? Bring up a command line and type...
ps aux | grep smbd
should see some process running

logging is turned off in smb.conf (unlikely but you never know)

How about LISA? LISA is an extension to the desktop which allows you to browse Windows networks...?!
