you can try a text/command line interface called LMME search www.sourceforge.net which I currently use or you can try this link in the General-Linux forum http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=12686 that dicusses this.

Try GAIM.

Its for AIM but comes wtih plugins so it also support ICQ (I don't think it does the new protocol yet), MSN, Yahoo, Jabber, IRC, and others.

http://gaim.sourceforge.net

As for installing, search the forums as this is asked all the time. Also the gaim homepage has excellent documentation.

depending on if you want to install using RPM or tar.gz
What distro are you using ? If its Redhat or Mandrake, go with RPM install, if your using like Slackware or something like that, install from source which would be the tar.gz file. Read the docs there, they should explain which and what to download.

And the forums is what your looking at when you asked the question. Linuxquestions is a forum.

I already sent the link. http://gaim.sourceforge.net

But if you want to specific link to an RPM package that should be compatible with Redhat: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/g...6.rpm?download

You can either download the dependency it needs which would be libperl.so.5.8 or maybe go with a previous version of gaim that might not need any other dependecies.

Like this maybe, two versions back.

if it asks for packages u don't have u just download those packages and install them..
if it says "libperl.so.5.8 is needed by gaim-0.59.1-1" u go to http://www.google.com/linux and u search on libperl5.8 or something related. then get the tar.gz file or rpm if available and u install the pacakge according to <packagedir>README

then do ./configure again and see if it needs other dependecies
it's just a matter of logical thinking
