Linux Network Setup question

Hello,

I'm trying to setup a network on my freish installed linux distribution.
Ive got the following data from windows ipcongi /all:
IP: 88.151.181.37
subnet mask: 255.255.255.248
Default gateway: 88.151.181.31
DNS: 88.151.176.10
212.116.254.6

how ccan i set up this to eth0 in linux ?
Which broadcast & gateway should i set up with ifconfig & route command ?

so far my actions were as follows:
ifconfig eth0 88.151.181.37 broadcast 88.151.181.255 netmask 255.255.255.248

then
route add default gw 88.151.181.31
but the it says: network is unreachable....

what am I doing wrong ?

thanks for help
s

It all appears ur using the wrong addressing scheme. For instance your IP address does not belong to same subnet as your gateway ie:
IP: 88.151.181.37 Belongs to the 88.151.181.32/29 subnet while
Default gateway: 88.151.181.31 Is in fact a broadcast to the 88.151.181.24/29 subnet

Verify on the addressing confirming if the windows can first browse and the rest will come flowing.

You mention that you subnet mask is 255.255.255.248. According to this subnet scheme.Your one of the subnets is

88.151.181.24 - 88.151.181.31 and another subnet will be
88.151.181.32 - 88.151.181.39
(of course there will be other subnets as well)

So if you see dablew is right. The 88.151.181.31 is the broadcast address of the 88.151.181.24/29 subnet.

Your ip address and your default gateway address are not part of same subnet and hance it is giving you that error. So find out if the addressing is proper.

Sader,

your ip address, subnet mask and broadcast address don't fit together.

That means you are in the subnet 88.151.181.32/29. IP addresses available in this subnet are 88.151.181.33-88.151.181.38. The broadcast address is 88.151.181.39 and *not* 88.151.181.255.

The address you specified as the default gateway 88.151.181.31 is not part of your subnet at all and thus not reachable. (See dablew's post)
