I am trying to get my Linksys WPC11 (Ver. 3 I think) wireless card to work on my Compaq presario laptop using HostAP drivers. I'm running Redhat 8.0, which works very well. By the way, I'm a recent convert to Linux in general, so maybe I'm missing something very simple. I was able to get my Orinoco Silver card working fine, but no such luck on the Linksys.
I followed various howto's and such, but to no avail.
Basically, when I type
# dmesg
I get the following:
wlan0: NIC: id=0x801b v1.0.0
wlan0: PRI: id=0x15 v.1.1.0
wlan0: STA: id=0x1f v1.4.2
wlan0: defaulting to bogus host-based encryption as a workaround for firmware in Hosat AP mode WEP
wlan0: defaulting to bogus WDS frame as a workaround for firmware bug in Host AP mode WDS
wlan0: secondary station firmware version 1.4.2 does not seem to work in Host AP mode
I don't even know how to explain what I did since I really don't know what I'm doing. I did go, however, to this link:
HostAP RPM I got the rpm and typed the
#rpm -i
filename
Was that the right start?
I then rebooted the machine and selected the kernel with the HostAP. On boot up, I got a "Beep, Beep" instead of the the "Boop" which I can only assume to mean that it recognized the card??? Anyway, still nothing. I went into the network setup and added the new card, but no luck.
What the heck did I do? What should have I done? Why do I do this to myself and keep coming back for more.
I even tried the directions in this
great Howto for Linux Kismet RedHat.
No luck either, actually, just the same stuff.
Thanks a ton for any help on this. I will post anything that might help (and I did search on these boards, but everyone seems to be putting linux-wlan on instead of HostAP).
