LDAP service is not getting started

we are trying to configure the LDAP server, we are using RH EL 4 version linux.
we specified some parameter in the "/etc/ldap.conf" file, and tried to start the service. But when we give "service ldap start" command it is showing that "ldap: unrecognized service".

what may be the reason or we have to configure any other file.
please kindly give us the steps to config because we are new to this LDAP topic.

thank in advance .
