Just got Suse Linux pro 9.1...need to connect to router
Hey guys, it's me agian. Right, I have a computer running Windows XP and Suse Linux Pro 9.1. Now, this computer accesses the internet from my home wireless ADSL Router, a D Link G604T. However, I do not connect to this wirelessly with this pc...as there are ethernet slots in the back, and therefore I use them. However, I am unable to access the internet without firstly pinging the website, say for example, if i Ping www.google.com, i can then access www.google.com, however, i can access AMSN Messenger.
I am getting annoyed with this problem as I would like to take full advantage of Suse Linux.
The Web browser I am running is Koroquer i think :S
I have posted this before, and anyone who has tried to help me before, thankyou very much for all your time.
All the help is appreciated..
Btw, I am using BT Broadband 1mb.
Thankyou,
Warnesey
And oh yeh, im new to linux, but I kinda know some stuff, so don't go all to much newbie talk. Cheers
Try another web browser. I had the same problem here (PC behind a router). I was NOT able to surf on the web with Konqueror , and I had to use Mozilla : no problem...
I don't know why but it works, maybe something like a gateway problem, impossible to configure in Konqueror...I don't really know...
Hi, i also have the DLink G604T with SuSE9.1 personal. Cant get it to connect to any sites either wired or wireless through it. When i try it on a DrayTek router all works fine, using mozilla seems to make no difference with the Dlink. Its strange how the sites can be accessed once they have been pinged, its also very annoying.
Anyone got any other ideas??
Also to note:the router page can be accessed (http://192.168.1.1) without having to ping it first. The DrayTek is on the subnet 255.0.0.0 ip address 10.0.1.1. Tryed that with the DLink but makes no difference
Amsn will sometimes connect, mozilla(firefox) will occasionally connect. Have updated the Dlink to the latest firmware, no difference
Need to pin down where exactly your problem lies in order to sort it out. Could be router set up, browser set up, DNS issues or firewall. Because the messenger stuff uses different ports that's not relevant to your browsing problem. Also because you log into your routers admin page using an IP address it doesn't use DNS to resolve anything.
First things first - SuSE 9.1 when first released had quite a few issues you need to do the YaST online update to make sure you're up to date with fixes.
Once you've browsed www.google.com can you browse any site?
If you have installed firewall try turning it off or uninstalling it temporarily to see if that's the issue.
DHCP writes a temporary /etc/resolv.conf file with the DNS nameserver in it. On my system currently it just has the router address which works for me - on other set ups it can write the ISP nameserver info there. If you know or can find out your ISP nameserver IP addresses you could edit /etc/resolv.conf and put them in. If that works then you can make your resolv.conf permanent by changing the DHCLIENT_MODIFY_RESOLV_CONF="yes" to DHCLIENT_MODIFY_RESOLV_CONF="no" in /etc/sysconfig/network/dhcp .
Provided that the other DHCP settings are left alone so that the router sets itself up as the default gateway this should work if it is a DNS issue.
You can access any site in konqueror just aslong as you ping it first, doing a google search then to get onto the page you need to ping it first (in konqueror and mozilla). VERY occasionally it will get onto a site if i dont ping it first. tryed DIG www.cnet.com and this will work. Seems to work for other domains i haven't visited before also. ALso tryed setting the computer to have a static IP with the DNS of the ISP and the gateway as the router(ip not hostname). I dont have any firewall enabled at the moment. Think the problem must be something to do with the router as it works on a DrayTek router fine with DHCP enabled.
If i browse www.google.com (by pinging it first) it will let me onto other google pages, news, groups etc (news.google.com , groups.google.com) but once i do a search and attempt to go to some page it wont go. (Unless its pinged first)
Also with DNS set to the router(ip) it doesent work
Have done all the updates in YaST, still nothing
If its of use the DLink router is on Bulldog (UK) 1mb
the drayTek is on BT 1mb
All what is said here seems a bit weird. I tried a dsl router (smc barricade) with KNOPPIX (http://knoppix.org/, linux entirely on a bootable cd-rom). All I had to do was to configure the login/password pair of my ISP on the router, and THAT IS ALL ! ALL WORKED FINE WITH MOZILLA ! NO PINGING OR WHATEVER ! Am I a lucky man ?...
Try KNOPPIX (download it, it's a nice stuff), and if it works, then it's probably your linux network congif...
I think it has something to do with the G604t router as it all works fine on a DrayTek. Tryed mozilla, konqueror. Also tryed mandrake 10. Have debian (stable) and slackware 10 (haven't installed either of these as the firewire drive that comes with the laptop isn't detected in the install. Is it worth trying? SuSE seems to have good hardware compatability from go compared with mandrake). Ill download knoppix and give it a go
Ok then, if it works fine with other routers, then it probably means that the problem comes from the router.
Maybe it would be a good idea to reset it (little button somewhere...) and try with the default factory config (generally, DHCP is on) and use DHCP to configure eth0 interface in Linux...
Yes, ment to say. Have reset the box many times and DHCP is enabled by default. On the DHCP config page set the DNS setting to the routers IP(which is default) and to the IP of the ISPs DNS. Still no luck
??? "...DNS setting to the router IP(wich is the default)..." ??? your router is not a DNS !!! Anyway, you do not need to put any DNS in your router config, it's generally automatic (it worked fine with a SMC Barricade without any DNS IP). Leave DNS adresses blank on your router.
One more thing : DNS has nothing to do with DHCP. It's a bit wierd that DNS config is found on your router's DHCP config page!...
Well, after logging onto the router after a hard reset
--------------------
DHCP Configuration
The device can be setup as a DHCP Server to distribute IP addresses to the LAN network.
[radio check mark] Enable DHCP server
Start IP: [192.168.1.2]
End IP: [192.168.1.255]
Primary DNS: [192.168.1.1]
Lease time: [3600] seconds
--------------------
Maybe it preforms dns relay of some sort??
Edit: Cant do much testing on it at the moment. Managed to screw up SuSE by trying to install slackware 10 (from a harddrive partition as it wouldent recognise the cd drive). Off topic but Slackware 10 'installed' 3gb of packages in about half a second. This was after formatting the drive with SuSE on, so now im stuck with nothing till i get my SuSE cd back (Cant download it either as i have no CD burner, but have the CD copyed on the hard drive)
Ok. Hard reset the router. Only setup the DSL settings, eth0(Wired lan configured with DHCP) eth1 (Wireless configured with DHCP).
Reboot the computer then went into a terminal su to root, ifconfig reported that both interfaces had an address (192.168.1.2 for eth0 and 192.168.1.3 for eth1) but still couldent get onto any sites without first ping hostname. (this is exactly what i did a while back with no effect before finding this thread)
