IPCONFIG /release (Dumb Question)

When you do a IPCONFIG /release does that do anything in the modems routing table in the lines of telling the modem that the MAC that was associated with the ip is to be forgotten ?
So that when another machine renews an IP the modem should assign in no problem without recycling the modem ?

Thanks
triki

Code:
bash-2.05b$ ipconfig
bash: ipconfig: command not found
Are you referring to a Windows machine?

well if i'm using IPCONFIG obviously it would be Windows, either way ipconfig or ifconfig the question would be the same.

when the ip is released from the machine does it clear it from the routing table so that you don't need to recycle the modem everytime you swap nic's or pc's. Cause I know the cable system I'm on you don't need to recycle the modem just releasing IP does it. But for a friend of mine he has to recycle the modem all together. The releasing doesn't release the MAC from the IP it's assigned from the ISP. I was wondering it that is due to the modem and the ISP setup.

Thanks

Hrm other than the fact you're asking this is a linux forum i'll continue.

The modem is not what dictates the MAC address to IP address association. That's handled by the DHCP server (unless of course you have you Dial up set for a static IP)

Most DHCP servers are set to reassign the same IP address to the last MAC on file unless the IP has been reissued to another device. So you can potentially get the same IP several times if you dial in shortly after releasing.

Also the MAC address is supposed to remain the same and be unique to each NIC.

welll... i can explane it how it works in our country....it's switzerland....

when i put on my modem.... it's gonna built up a connection to our ISP ...... and now...please read accurately:
  • the modem receives a routing table from our ISP.... and loads that onto...
I often had the same problem... I connected a computer to our modem.... let's call it "PC 1"..... after I shut this one down, ... I can't get an ip for another machine (for example: "PC 3").... cause my modem still thinks, my mac-address of "PC 1" has still reserved its ip...

So..... sometimes, i had to wait a half a week....*grrrr*

well, that's stupid, i know.... but it just forces us to use masquerading
greetings
pablo

Sometimes you have to wait for the ARP table to flush. Just be patient and let it sit for a while if it doesn't work.
