IP Address mess......

is there a way to configure the ip of my linux computer?? i am using mandrake... not sure what version.... but i am having a conflict with my winxp computer and my linux computer.... my computer (WinXP sys) is running on a wireless network every thing is fine until i decide to learn linux and make a file server for every one to use in my apartment.... because the most of the network is wireless, including mine, i cant run the linux sys directly on the network due to the fact that it does not support USB.... it is a cheap system for me to learn on incase i mess something up =P..... to fix this i installed a net card (100-based t) in both systems.... and linking them via crossover cable.... the olny problem is that the linux computer is reading an IP of 192.168.0.37 when WindowsXP is telling me that the IP is 192.168.0.1 and i am not sure if that is a problem or not.... also... i need to know if the linux system can be seen on the net work even tho it is behind my computer????? ..... my Windows system has a DMZ IP set up so i can make FTP servers and other things.... is the linux sys DMZ as well??? ....Someone Please help me understand this in tanglement of address.....

As far as I can tell, your windows machine is connected to the company LAN (wireless) and your linux machine is connected to your windows machine via a cross over?

With this set up, unless your windows machine is acting as a router then the linux machine will not be able to see the company LAN.

What are the IP's of the systems? The windows machine will have two IP's. One for the wireless and one for the connection to the linux box. The linux box will have 1 IP, the connection to the windows machine.

As long as the two IP addresses on the ethernet link between the two systems are different, and on a different subnet to your company LAN, then you shouldn't have any problems.

If all the IP's are on the same subnet (ie, they all start with 192.168.<something>), then you'll have to change the IP's for each of the machine's ethernet cards to a different subnet (ie, 10.<something>).

To change the IP address of the linux box, look through the configuration application that comes with Mandrake (easier for newbies than editing files!).

Hope this helps,

Darren.
