ip address configuration

i've used ifconfig to configure an ip address for my eth0 but when i restart, my ip address has changed again, eth0 shows a different ip, not the one i just confired.
i dont have xwindows, so i need to find the file where the ip is read from when eth0 configuration takes place during bootup.
Does anyone know where to touch?

(changing it in /etc/hosts doesnt seem to be enough)
im ususing suse 8.2

thanks

Look in the directory /etc/init.d for a file that seems to be related to networking. Or maybe in the file rc.conf. I am not sure (i dont have suse) There is a file around that defines the IP address of the NIC.

You may also try yast2. Or yast.

If you just set it in the shell, it will obviously get lost after a reboot, because you dont save any config changes. /etc/host does only name to IP translation (so would a nameserver do too) so that has absolutely no effect on your IP

Take a look at /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0 .
I think your static ip address needs to go in there.
I use dhcp from smoothwall, so it's been a while since I thought about assigning an IP address.
