.htaccess stops working

I had a password protected directory on my webserver, but when I went into it today it didn't ask me for a username and password. Could changing owners of the folders make a difference?

It shouldn't do.

Are you sure that you didn't just save the password on the PC?

I just tried it from a 3rd pc (one that I have just taken out of the box and setup). The only thing I can think of that I've changed latley is adding another name based virtual domain. Is there something in the httpd.conf that would effect this? If so I probably need to go reset it.

Just make sure you have:
AllowOverride AuthConfig

specified for the directory where the .htaccess file is.

the directory wasn't listed so at the end of my httpd.conf I added
Code:
<Directory "/path/to/folder">
          Options Indexes
          AllowOverride AuthConfig
          Allow from all
          Order allow,deny
</Directory>
Now I get "500 Internal Server Error"

The error page also does not have the proper administrator e-mail. I changed the e-mail in the httpd.conf earlier today. Any idea what I'm missing. BTW if it makes a difference this box is running Fedora Core 1.

I figured it out. I had tried to recreate the .htaccess and the htpasswd file and managed to create some errors in the .htaccess It's working now. Thanks for your help.
