how to test network bandwidth?

so now that i have my own little private network, how do i test the transfer speeds between computers?

what i would really like to test is the performance increase between my onboard 100Mb NIC and my 2 1Gb NICs. (each computer has 3 NICs if that wasn't clear).

a C program wouldn't take too long, but then again, if there is already a program out there that does this... then i can do other things.

thanks a ton in advance for any info.

Well one of the simplest tests would be to just ftp a file from one to the other. Ofcourse with gigabyte ethernet cards you could be running into other problems which might be the bottleneck instead of your network cards.

But you can always go to the following site and get one of the benchmark programs.

http://lbs.sourceforge.net

The NetPerf should cover most of the things you are trying to measure.
