Network bandwidth 1/2 what it should be

I have a simple LAN, two hosts connected with a cross-connect cable for simple filesharing via samba. Anyways the network usuage is very low, nload puts it at around 1.5mbps (with both computers using 10/100mbps cards) rather than the prefereable 100mbps or even 10mbps. What could be the problem with my configuration??? I'm presuming configuration as due to simplicity of network, traffic is very low.

One machine runs gentoo linux with an onboard NIC (motherboard SiS645-LAN) which uses a SiS900 chipset.

Other machine runs windows 2000 with a D-Link DFE-530TX PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter.

WIndows identifies link as 100mbps, so anyone got any ideas??? not a connection error as "ifconfig eth0" shows no errors or collisions therefore not physical layer fault.

p.s how can I display the media type/max bandwidth in linux??? like the connection status dialog in windows

Hi geniarse,

using a cross cable, did you set the network cards to full duplex? That will not work, use half duplex instead.

My 2 cents.
