Question How to create a banner with a text message before a client is authenticated...

I am an IT student and I am in a Red Hat System Administration IV class. I am allowed to use any resources I can to complete my labs or lab tests. I am in the section of Managing Red Hat Network Services. So in order to complete this lab it asks; "Adjust the banner presented to clients upon initial connection (before authentication) to include a text. You should be able to confirm your configuration using the simple ftp client." I'm a little confused. If someone could at least give me a hint or something that would be great. Thanks.

before login:
Code:
ls /etc/issue*
after login:
Code:
ls -l /etc/motd
these files show info on shell login, on ssh login, but i don't remember if FTP will use them too...

i don't use RHEL, so i don't know the caveats of it, on Debian they are generated using templates on each boot, so you are not supposed to touch them, instead you need to edit the templates.

i will not give you more info, because you are a student and you must learn how to look at the documentation yourself.
remember, in a enterprise distribution like RHEL or Suse, the available manuals are your best friends.

in other time, the answer at your question would be as simple as "RTFM" (Read The ..... Manual)

best regards

The description states the use of an ftp client. Hence: to what connects an ftp client?

The ftp client is connected through an ftp server by authentication and authorization.

I didn't figure it out, because I was just informed that there was a grading error with that specific question. I will look more into it once I have time to. Thanks for the response. In some cases Red Hat can be a little confusing at times. There was a statement made by one of my instructors in an earlier RHEL class and he said, "What's hard is easy, and what's easy is hard."
