by default, the root login would be " root ", and this can't be changed, am i right to say that?
okays, anyways, i'm on a local area network here connected to internet as well. so, where can i reach to the place where i can add/view network cards in the system and to configure IP, subnet, and DNS for red hat linux enterprise linux 3 here to connect to the LAN?
you can change root's name in theory, but it is a very very very very bad idea, so stop thinking about it.
you didn't tell us what distro you're using, so we can't tell you where to look. it'll be in some twiddly control panel somewhere though if it's FC4, suse, ubuntu etc... on fedora / redhat try redhat-config-network or something.
