how ip address conflict is detected


what is ip conflict?
how one pc on a LAN detect ip address conflict.?

I don't know how Windows handles it's IP conflict warning function, but I don't think this is a very good place to ask about it either.

The kernel has no built in ability to detect gratuitous ARP messages (at least that I am aware of). So Linux itself doesn't detect IP conflicts or do anything about them.

It looks like there are some userland implementations of this idea using libpcap, such as IPwatchD.
