High-level question about printing via a router?

Hi all,

apologies for not having the first clue here...

I've got a Linux server/router in Melbourne and another router in Perth - both are connected to the internet via fixed IP address.

Connected to the 4 port router in Perth is a PC (with telnet/ssh software) and a HP Laser (Jet Direct Printer).

I can SSH into Melb (i.e. melb router forwards ssh connections to the Linux box). All's good there!

I now want to be able to send printjobs from Melb to the HP Laser in Perth.

Just, even hyperthetically, how would I go about doing this?

Sorry but my limited knowledge only extends so far as printing to printer that physically sits on the LAN.

Thank you to anyone who can help,

Greg.

there are many ways you could go about doing this, essentially you *COULD* just portforward your print server to your external address (assuming you are using CUPS this is port 631 i think) and print to it directly through cups. having said that that's very insecure, and you'd be much better off adding a vpn into the equation, e.g. OpenVPN and then do the same thing. other than the security aspect here, the fact that it's over the internet is pretty irrelevant.

following acid_kewpie suggestion..

For example :

We can imitate your scenario even in my own lan only,
i can install the respective HP printer locally at my box with w.x.y.Z, though the original ip of this printer is w.x.y.P(effective ip)

& hence i can do DNATing at OUTPUT.., i.e.
Code:
iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT -d w.x.y.Z -j DNAT --to w.x.y.P
Thats it !
& if security is your concern, you can pipe it through ssh or use openvpn, though i do not have much info about openvpn at this time but probably someone will surely help you out.

In you case you got do DNATing at source(Melb) & SNATing at the reciepent(Perth) to effectively print your documents.
