Help with suse network

Hello from a non-network savy person,
This is my first post to this network forum and I really need help..I have downloaded suse 10.0,and for almost a month have not been able to configure
the system to connect to the internet..
I have a wired linksys 4 port router/via cable modem with two boxes on it and with anything but suse 10.0 both boxes work fine..Not a hardware issue..
I tried static IP's but went back to DHCP client.I use the Tulip driver for my NIC chip and have compared all the settings for version 9.2 which connects fine to 10.0 which does not..
The results of "ifstatus eth0" is exactly the same numbers except for two things..

9.2 is as follows:BROADCAST,MULTICAST,NOTRAILERS,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen but 10.0 shows NO CARRIER in front of this line..

The "route -v" command also shows a difference as follows..
9.2 which connects = 1 of 1 configured routes for interface eth0 up but 10.0 shows 1of (2)two configurations..

The following numbers(destination, genmask, for link-local and loopback as well as default )are exactly the same....

The DNS numbers are the same as those in the other working systems..

I really do not understand this and thru all my readings cannot solve it..
I need help from someone who can steer me in the right direction so that
10.0 is a useable system..
Thank you for reading this post and any help will be appreciated,
jolphil

read man pages on ifconfig to see how to start/stop network if.

running

/sbin/ifconfig or /usr/sbin/ifconfig

would show you all the paratmers for the port

ifconfig eth0 up or ifup eth0 will start an interface ..

no carrier in front of the port means that port is not configured.
go you yast and find the hardware setup screen .. I am not using my suse machine so can't be specific .. but yast2 is excellent for starting up the interfaces.

Something very strange happened..While changing eth0 settings in Yast twice now I was able to connect to the internet..The strange part is that it went like lightning to the first website but would not go any where else after that..Just sat there..Even when I rebooted it would not come back on..
Has anyone ever heard of that? I tried both Konqueror and Firefox and neither will go anywhere after the first connect....Can some file be overwritten? I am at a loss..I cant recall what the settings were because after that I changed them again..
Thank You,
jolphil
