GPRS tethered Palm Treo on Mandriva

I am trying to set up a Palm Treo 680 as a tethered modem using Mobile-stream's "USB Modem" software from my ASUS A8JS using Mandriva 2007S. The mobile provider is Vodafone (NZ).

When I try to connect, I get he following:

pppd /dev/ttyACM0 call ppp-script-treo
send (AT&F0E0V1S0=0^M)
expect (OK)
*MRDY: 1^M
^M
OK
-- got it

send (AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","www.vodafone.net.nz"^M)
expect (OK)
^M
^M
OK
-- got it

expect (CONNECT)
^M
^M
+CUSD: 5, "", 0^M
^M
OK^M
alarm
Failed
Connect script failed
[root@a8js ppp]#

I am unsure what is wrong, but I suspect the problem is in contacting he GPRS provider (vodafone). I believe the APN is correct - I suspect the number called (ATD*99#).

Unfortunately, until I can fix this, I am having trouble working on the problem as I can only connect to the internet via Windows, involving constant reboots!send (ATD*99#^M)

Does anyone have any experience with this, or know of a forum where "USB Modem" is discussed, or have any experience with connecting to Vodafone?

thanks

Jim

I found the default dialing number (the ATD number) supplied by USB Modem *99# was the problem. Switching to *99***1# resulted in connection (I still have a problem where Mandriva is trying to use the wifi as the gateway, but I'll post that in the Mandriva forum).

If *99***1# doesn't work, I have found references to other people using *99**1*1# and *98*2#, so these might work. I suspect it is phone dependant, so while works for Palm Treo (and Siemens, I think), other phones might work with other numbers.

Jim

PS I used PDANet under Windows to search for this solution. If you have a similar problem and need a short-term Windows solution, PDANet seems quite effective.
