FTP startup error

Hi everyone

Tried to figure how to use vsftpd tonight.
Downloaded the tar, extracted and installed, all fine.
Followed the INSTALL text file that came with it.
Things go wrong when i try to run vsftpd.

[root@tux vsftpd-2.0.3]# vsftpd &
[1] 2885
[root@tux vsftpd-2.0.3]# 500 OOPS: could not bind listening IPv4 socket

Anyone know where i have gone wrong here?

Do you already have an FTP server running on that port, like proftpd?

If you're not sure try "ftp 0" and see if you can log in.

Also, I wouldn't run it from the source directory.

I did have proftp installed, but i erased it and replaced it with vsftpd.
Tried running ftp 0 and got the same error message.

Take a look at the file /etc/inetd.conf, or the directory /etc/xinet.d/ (if you use xinetd) to see if there is a reference to proftpd and thus the (x)inetd daemon binds to the ftp port.

Regards

There is nothing in the file /etc/inetd.conf and there is only referneces to vsftpd in the directory /etc/xinet.d
