Firewall asking user name and pass

hi,
is it possible to build linux box as a firewall asking users their user name and password everytime they want to connect to internet.

This is an authentication function of a proxy server..

You would need to block access generally, and only permit from the proxy ip address.

Yup it's possible. The easiest way - create a VPN server on the box. If your clients are Windows ones - install a poptop progam and share internet over it not just over ip forward. This will give you a possibility to autorize your clients. If you are interested I can write you a complete HOWTO
