Question Fedora Core 2 samba server

I have a windows xp workgroup (all xp home) and I want to use the FC2 as a file server for the workgroup.
I want all computers to be able to connect to a public share and have read/write perm and also each user will have a priv. dir.
I`m new to linux and what I`m getting now is all xp boxs say I don`t have permission to access the resource.
What do I need to do?
Aside from that I would love a link to a howto from a-z on how to setup a linux box on a xp home workgroup using samba or nfs.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
you can start by looking at www.samba.org there are HOWTO links and all documentation there.
Te access problem depends on the security setting. You probably need to make sure the computer name is in /etc/hosts and also a valid user (/etc/passwd, /etc/shadow). Also the name they log onto the PC as needs to be in passwd and shadow (if different from the pc name).

Bobo's answer sounds like disengaging. I implemented Samba in FC1 with Windows 2000/XP clients and it worked beautifully with practically no effort. When migrating to FC2, every effort has been in vain: FC2 doesn work, even using the same configuration as FC1. So, it seems to be a bug in either FC2 or Samba. I gave up and set a W2K server to handle the file/print serving. It seems Linux isn't ready yet for prime time. Too amateur methods and little formality.
