Ethernet, Connected but not Connected!

Just installed Freespire v.1.0.13 and I'm having odd troubles getting my Ethernet to connect.

As a user (looking for change) of Fedora Core, I find this surprising because my ethernet "just works", same applies to Knoppix.

My Ethernet runs on a 82562EZ controller. Supported fully under Linux.

The Network Information icon at the right of the toolbar (in KDE) when hovered over reports when loaded under DCHP that;

Code:
Profile: jubert (Name of this machine in question)
Status: Unkown
Speed: 100 mbps full
Yet Netwok Information (The dialog that appears after double clicking the Icon) shows;

Code:
Status: Connection Good
Speed: 100 mbps full
So my connection is Unknown, but at the same time good. Interesting. As well as that, the Statistics (In the aforementioned dialog) show packet activity. Confirmed by the below ifconfig.

Code:
Link encap: Ethernet HWaddr 00:0F:FE:AB:D4:01
inet6 addr: fe80::20f:feff:feab:d401/64 Scope: Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:2 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:673 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes: 632 (632.0 b) TX bytes:3004 (29.3 KiB)
DHCP and Static setups both output similar results with only one exception. When under DCHP, upon hovering over the Network Information icon in the toolbar, it shows "Status: Unknown." When performing the same action under a Static configuration it Shows "Not Connected", yet double clicking the icon shows "Connection Good.".

I have checked all the obvious, hardware, things plugged in, RJ45's plugged in, etc, etc. It's not the first time I've spent days looking for a problem to something like that, but the connections are all fine as tested by other machines on the network.

A brief overview of my home network.

Internet Line > Firewall > Router > My Computer

There are various other machines connected to the router, but for sake of simplicity, there it is.

Code:
ping 192.168.0.1
PING 192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data
From 192.168.0.45 [2] icmp_seq=1 Destination host unreachable
192.168.0.45 is jubert, the machine running Freespire, and the one I've been talking about all along. Statistics provide more joy, yielding 100% packet loss.

Thanks for reading, I hope someone can help me out on this one.

Charlie.

Was jubert's IP (192.168.0.45) obtained by DHCP?

Simon,

Sorry for the confusion, that is on static setup.
Pinging on a DHCP setup gives out a Network Unavailable error from the shell, or something like that. I'm not at my home computer to give the exact message atm.

Cheers,

Charlie.

Have you tried resetting the static IP address?

Have you logged into the router to see what is going in there?

Some routers need to have static IP assignments manually entered in the routing table itself before the IP becomes active.(Not recommended).

This is looking like a settings mixup all right.

If the router does DHCP, this is the easiest way to connect, but the nic needs to be set to DHCP too.
You gotta go carefully through you router settings (or, maybe, reboot the router).

Yes, I have tried several different static IP's all of which return the same result.

Thats interesting, I have never had this kind of problem before with any other Unixes. The only setting I see that could be relevant to your observation in my router settings are under the "Basic Settings" area within a Netgear DG824PN.

The sections are described as follows,
____________________________________________________
Internet IP address.

Get dynamically from ISP (Radio button checked)
Use a static IP address (Radio button un-checked)
____________________________________________________

Am I right in thinking that would set a static public IP address? I'm a little hesitant to try that, as I have other users on my network that wouldn't be at all pleased if I screwed the connection up.

Edit,

Sorry Simon, didn't see you there!

Is an onboard nic, and i set it to DHCP in the network manager for KDE, should I be doing something else? Everything is setup for DCHP on my router, and I have tried rebooting a few times before too.

Thanks for the reply,

Charlie.
