Ethernet Comms between XP and Fedora 14

Does Fed 14 need something extra to communicate with Windows XP? Like a Samba Server?

Can someone please advise me.

Thank you.

Depends what you mean by "communicate". If you want to "browse" a "windows share" on your XP box from your F14 box, you can use a file manager that has samba client built in. I suspect that Nautilus (default gnome file manager) should do this for you.

If you want to do the opposite: ie browse a file system on your F14 box from the XP box, then you'll need to install and/or configure a samba server[1].

Cheers,

Evo2.

1. There are other ways, but I suspect samba is what you are looking for.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I want to browse a file system that is on my Fed 14 box from my XP system.

I also want to send ethernet packets between the two systems.

Kind regards

Ok, so you need to install and/or configure a samba server. I don't use Fedora so I don't know the specifics for setting up samba on F14, but there should be plenty of information on the web.

Well, that is a prerequisite for using samba as described above. Do you know the IP address of each machine? Can you ping one machine from the other?

Thanks again.

Yes, I can ping between the Linux and XP boxes. But I cannot send packets from XP to Linux.

I have an embedded device that sends ethernet data to the Linux box succesfully. When I change the port number and recompile to receive from the XP box then it does not work.

Regards

Good.

Sorry I don't know what you mean by "send packets". So, ping works but "sending packets" does not?

Ok, now you've completely lost me. Can you be more specific?

Thanks again.

I can now send and receive ethernet packets from XP (Delphi code) to F14 box. When in doubt always check the cable. Check it again.

I am still unable to see my F14 files on my XP pc. For that I probaly need samba installed.
I however can see my XP Shared Files on my F14 box.
