Error forwarding X through SSH (FC4/Debian)

Hi guys, thanks for taking the time to have a look.

I have been running a Fedora Core 4 (2.6.14.-1.1637_FC4) workstation for a while now

I installed a Debian Sarge (2.6.8-2-686) server yesterday.

They are connected via ethernet to my router.

So far i have SSH, VNC and an NFS share all setup and working fine.

My problem is when i try x forwarding via SSH from the server to the client (FC 4 workstation).

i searched the forums and found http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...+x+through+ssh

but trying that i get the error **CRITICAL** unable to open display

thus not allowing me to display server X apps on the client (which is the problem of this thread)

i have also done xhost + on the host to allow all x connections (what it's for?) and still nada.

Can anyone shed light on the error or a solution?

Yeah i know having VNC i can get around not forwarding through X but i like to tinker and try new things and this stands in my way

Thanks again

What do you exactly do ?
The regular way is to launch ssh as an X client on the client host. For example launch the X server and xterm, invoke "ssh -X -l username debian_host" from xterm. Then at ssh prompt, launch the app you want on the server. Is that what you did ?

Have you checked if X forwarding is enabled in the sshd config file of the debian machine ?

Ok thank you very much that fixed the problem.

I had changed a line in /etc/ssh/ssh_config to read
# ForwardX11 yes (note it's commented out too, duh!)

restarted ssh service and nada.

Took another look at the service i was restarting and it was the sshd

so i changed /etc/ssh/sshd_config to read

X11Forwarding yes

and it works

Cheers mate
