I have PCQ-Linux 2004 installed on my desktop computer. I am trying to connect to a Unix server X-window session from my desktop. I am using telnet. I am able to login in the server but when i try to get the display of the server on my desktop i get the message like

Error: can't open display

can anyone help me for this

You have to set the DISPLAY variable in the client box... and add the client host to the X server's allowed hosts:

(in case you want to run mozilla)

I can you pls clear some of my doubts.

with X Server----do you mean the server to with i am logging in?

and

with Client------do you mean the desktop on which i want the display?

There is no problem with the telnet. Its fine. Now i want to run the Fluent software from the server. and i want the software display interface on my desktop.

so now can u pls explore ur reply
pls let me know in detail., i am not very good at linux

Sure... in that case the client (the X client) is your Unix server. The X server will be your desktop computer.

The X is a network service itself. You will run one application in some host (your Unix server) and it will try to use an X server (your desktop computer) to display the visual parts.

In other words.... the X client is the host that ACTUALLY RUNS the process and the X server is the hosts that actually DISPLAYS the visual part.

well but one more thing i want to ask you. when i am doing the same thing from a red hat linux box then its getting fine and there is no error. I don't have to give any such command which you have mentioned for red hat.

for red hat i am giving

xhost +
DISPLAY='MY DESKOTP IP ADDRESS:0"

and then i telnet to the unix server and everything works fine

why so? why the error is comming in pcq linux?

well... I guess that's because the ssh client (or telnet client) is enabling X forward by default.

so can i disable the x forwarding on pcq linux

I guess so.... but I don't know how..... start another thread. (maybe it can be done with one option of your telnet-ssh client (or maybe if you change its default values).
