well i installed ubuntu 8.04.1 desktop version and am trying right from the morning to connect to the net but its no use. my modem id a asdl model and i think it does not store the password and username as i have to initiate a connection everytime. i was suggested to use the pppoe command but it didnt work as such. i have used the ppp config command and followed the steps as instructed in one of the websites ubuntu geek. it is not working as well. whenever i use the pon command it fails and yes i use the username after pon command. i downloaded the scanModem and had a scan but it failed to identify the modem, the details i cannot put because firstly i didnot understand and secondly because windows xp cannot read it.
i tried almost everything but finally failed.
honestly i am not a software developer or something but dared to use linux. i really hope i get a bit of a help.
p.s. i tried to do it from the app too but first a new connection cannot be created and secondly whenever i close the networking window the check against the connection against phone option gets unchecked automatically.
theres one more problem i tried to install gnome ppp by giving the command sudo apt-get install gnome -ppp but the system replied that it failed to find such a file.
so anyone plz tell me what to do next. anyway i am tired from restarting my pc to jump from ubuntu to windows and forth.
If you have an ADSL modem, and it's working with XP, there are two question you could answer:
1) Is the ADSL modem inside your computer and connected to the 'phone mains from there, or is it a separate "box" connected to your computer with an Ethernet cable?
2) Are you "dual booting" XP and Ubuntu using a single computer, or do you have two different computers?
Note that DSL "modems" are quite different from "standard" telephone modems, and that most software (such as "ScanModem") that is looking for a "modem" is attempting to find an analog modem and then a "dial tone" from the telephone mains so it can make a standard telephone call to the ISP with which you've contracted for services. A DSL modem, on the other hand, does not look for a "dial tone." It expects to be directly connected to the telephone company's switch and from there to your ISP. The DSL connection is "always on," and (if you've installed the filters correctly) your DSL connection and your voice connections use the same 'phone line without any problem. (If you've failed to install the filters correctly, the DSL traffic will make your voice traffic sound "noisy," and the voice traffic can cause the DSL connection to be dropped.)
